Holon comes from the Greek hólos,
meaning "whole" and is the stem
of the word "holistic".

Carla was born and raised by the sea, where stillness and movement coexist in quiet dialogue. Through her lens, she explores the rhythm of life that unfolds without intention — where simplicity becomes an act of contemplation.

We have been exploring Natural Movements together for the past half year.

In what respect have explorations of natural movement changed your perspective on nature and its movements?

Nature simply is without needing to be, and that makes it pure, free and infinite. It has helped me appreciate it even more, and to understand that we are intrinsically part of it. Observing it outwardly can help us look inwardly and consequently embrace change and understand things from a gentler place. Nature can serve as a mirror for us.

Do you have an example for this new perspective on natural movement? What have you seen and experienced differently than before?

Even though trees may seem still at first glance, they are engaged in constant, subtle movement: sap circulates through them, carrying water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves, where photosynthesis takes place; roots, branches and trunk grow slowly, adding new layers of wood and bark; their bodies breathe with almost imperceptible daily micromovements; and at the same time, they adapt to their environment, bending, turning toward the light, while responding to wind, climate and earth.

I’ve realised that to truly understand, you just need to pause and really look at, really observe things with a curious and innocent gaze, allow yourself to be amazed, inhabit the space and watch with attention and calm. We rarely stop and step out of the rushed pace at which we move and think. Rhythms, transformations and changes take place continuously. Everything moves forward, sometimes invisible to our eyes, but always present. Life is everywhere and we often forget that.

What have your explorations and observations shown that natural movements have in common?

All natural movements share a sense of freedom from intention; they flow effortlessly and simply exist. There is no effort, no tension and no predetermined plan. Natural movements live in harmony with the space they are part of.
